St. Patricks day

17th march is a national holiday in Ireland. On this day is celebrated St. Patrick , the patron saint of Ireland.

St. Patrick "used the shamrock to teach people about Christianity as he travelled around Ireland. He told people that each of the three leaves illustrated the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit of the Holy Trinity."

This is the reason why Shamrock is the symbol of this day. Nevertheless this is likely to be pure mythology since old Irish manuscripts make no reference to this in connection with St Patrick.

St. Patrick is most known for driving away the snakes from Ireland.

"Different tales tell of his standing upon a hill, using a wooden staff to drive the serpents into the sea, banishing them forever from the shores of Ireland.

It is true that there are no snakes in Ireland, but probably never had been. As in many old pagan religions serpent symbols were common, and driving the snakes from Ireland was probably symbolic of putting an end to the pagan practice. "

St. Patrick's Festival
This day is celebrated in more countries around the world than any other.
However, celebrations held in Ireland for St. Patrick's Day prior to 1996 were not very known. Only in November 1995, the Government of Ireland decided to establish St. Patricks Festival.

Nowadays, months of preparation are necessary to plan Ireland's biggest annual celebration(with 4 days of events).

St. Patrick viajou como missionário na Irlanda, usando o trevo para ensinar a Santa Trindade aos povos pagãos. Para ele, cada uma das três folhas representava o Pai, o filho e o espírito Santo. Assim, o trevo tornou-se o simbolo deste dia. No entanto, não existem referências históricas que confirmem este facto.

Festival de St. Patrick
Este festival é celebrado em mais países que qualquer outro. No entanto, apenas em Novembro de 1995 o governo decidiu criar o festival de St. Patrick para desenvolver as celebrações na Irlanda.
Actualmente, o festival dura cerca de 4 dias sendo necessários meses de preparação.
